A tragic attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter early New Year’s Day left 15 people dead and at least 35 injured after a man drove a truck into crowds on Bourbon Street. The perpetrator, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an Army veteran and US citizen, was reportedly inspired by the Islamic State group.
Jabbar’s white Ford F-150 Lightning mounted a pavement to evade a police car before plowing into pedestrians. He also fired on law enforcement, injuring two officers, before being killed by police gunfire. Improvised explosive devices and a silenced long gun were recovered from the scene.
President Joe Biden confirmed the FBI’s investigation into Jabbar’s potential terrorist affiliations, citing videos he uploaded expressing intent to kill. The attack, described by police as “very intentional,” also involved suspected accomplices, although authorities have not released evidence confirming their identities.
Bourbon Street, a popular nightlife hub in the French Quarter, remains shaken by this act of violence. Known for its vibrant celebrations, including Mardi Gras, the area is a cornerstone of New Orleans tourism.
