The Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have signed an addendum to the Return-to-Work Formula regarding the posting of intern doctors. This new agreement updates the previous formula established on May 8, 2024.
Public Health and Professional Standards PS Mary Muthoni stated that this important agreement confirms the immediate posting of 1,210 intern doctors, enabling them to commence their internships by August 1, 2024. The doctors’ union was represented by Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah.
PS Muthoni noted that the ministry will revoke the Internship Offer Letters issued on March 18, 2024, and that the terms for intern doctors will follow the conditions set forth in their placement letters. Disputed remuneration issues will be resolved in accordance with the final determination of the Eldoret Employment and Labour Relations Court and other related cases. She assured that all arrears earned prior to the court’s ruling would be paid in full within ninety days.
The nationwide strike by doctors ended following a return-to-work agreement with the Ministry of Health and county governments on May 8. KMPDU members had been on strike for 56 days. However, frustrations resurfaced among intern doctors, leading to protests at Afya House on July 8, expressing their dissatisfaction over prolonged delays in official postings. They sustained these protests for four days, only calling them off on July 11 as a goodwill gesture.
In her statement, PS Muthoni expressed gratitude to KMPDU for their constructive engagement during the mediation process. She emphasized that the agreement represents a positive step toward improving working conditions for healthcare professionals and ensuring quality healthcare for all Kenyans. The ministry remains committed to collaborating with KMPDU and other stakeholders to resolve ongoing issues and enhance Kenya’s healthcare system.
