Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has defended his remarks at the funeral of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother, where he called for an end to abductions, a statement that sparked criticism from various leaders.
Natembeya condemned the verbal attacks he faced, particularly from National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, who accused him of failing to act on such issues during his tenure as a regional commissioner.
During the funeral, Natembeya criticized Cotu boss Francis Atwoli for claiming some people staged their own abductions for financial gain. Natembeya called the remarks “unfortunate,” urging for the release of those abducted to ease their families’ suffering.
Ichung’wah countered, suggesting Natembeya report such cases to authorities instead of publicly criticizing leaders like Atwoli.
In response, Natembeya defended his record as a regional commissioner, describing himself as diligent and scandal-free. He emphasized his commitment to addressing the trauma experienced by families of abducted youths, urging state organs to adhere to the rule of law.
“Speaking against extrajudicial abductions is not undermining the President,” Natembeya stated, vowing to continue advocating for justice and the end of abductions.
