Dozens of anti-riot police were deployed across Nairobi on Friday in anticipation of protests demanding the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye. While reports suggested the demonstrations might be postponed to Monday, February 24, authorities took no chances, positioning officers at key locations, including the Ugandan Embassy, State House, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Besigye, who was abducted in Kenya in November 2024 and detained in Uganda, faces charges of treason and illegal firearm possession. His imprisonment has sparked outcry from human rights groups, calling his trial in a military court unconstitutional. Despite a Ugandan Supreme Court ruling against such trials, the government has refused to comply.
Activists continue to push for Besigye’s immediate release, condemning cross-border repression and pledging to escalate their demands through petitions and international outreach.
