The body of 24-year-old activist Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti, who went missing in November 2024, was discovered at Thika Level Five Hospital mortuary over a month later. Authorities cited a hit-and-run as the cause of death, but questions remain.
Mwiti was last seen in Nairobi city centre, prompting a family-led search supported by social media appeals. A missing person report was filed at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15, 2024. His family eventually found his body in Thika on January 2, 2025, leaving them devastated and demanding answers about the circumstances of his death.
His mother, Sadhiya Iman, shared that Mwiti faced challenges before his death, including the loss of his ID card, which made accessing essential services difficult. Friends and family expressed doubts about the hit-and-run explanation, while police have yet to release an official statement.
Mwiti’s death highlights growing fears among Kenyans amid a surge in abductions and enforced disappearances. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported at least 82 abductions since June 2024, with 13 cases in the last three months alone.
Director of Public Prosecutions Mulele Ingonga has ordered expedited investigations into these cases. He directed Inspector General Douglas Kanja and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to provide updates within three days, emphasizing the state’s constitutional duty to protect citizens’ rights and security.
The activist’s death joins a string of unresolved cases, including those of social media personalities and youths critical of the government, intensifying public demand for accountability.
