A metallic object fell from the sky on December 30, 2024, landing about two kilometers from Mukuku Police Post in Mbooni East, Makueni County, sparking curiosity and concern. Witnesses reported a loud bang heard up to 50 kilometers away.
The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) identified the object as a 2.5-meter-wide metallic ring weighing approximately 500 kilograms, believed to be a fragment of a rocket’s separation ring. Such debris is typically designed to burn up during re-entry or fall in uninhabited areas like oceans.
KSA officials, alongside a multi-agency team, secured the site and retrieved the debris for further investigation. The agency assured the public it is an isolated case and posed no immediate danger.
“We are analyzing the object to determine its origin and will keep the public updated,” the KSA stated, expressing gratitude to residents and local authorities for their cooperation.
KSA and the Kenya Defence Forces are investigating the incident under international space law.
