A group of Muslim clerics in Mombasa is calling for the dismissal of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, arguing that it was unjust for him to be spared during the recent Cabinet reshuffle. The Kenya Muslim National Advisory Council, led by Chairman Sheikh Juma Ngao, expressed their concerns during a press briefing on Monday.
In addition to Mudavadi, who also oversees the Foreign Affairs portfolio, the council criticized the removal of Attorney General Justin Muturi, asserting that he should be reinstated.
“President Ruto dissolved his Cabinet in response to public demand, but why was the Foreign Affairs CS spared? This inconsistency is unfair to the others,” Ngao stated.
The clerics urged the President to go further by investigating and prosecuting former Cabinet Secretaries Kithure Kindiki, Mithika Linturi, Aden Duale, and former Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome for their alleged misconduct, which they claim has harmed taxpayers.
Sheikh Ngao specifically cited Kindiki for his involvement in the abduction and killing of protestors, and criticized Duale for deploying the military for civilian duties, which he argued should be handled by the Kenya Police Service. “The military should only intervene during declared emergencies,” he emphasized.
Linturi was called out for the distribution of counterfeit fertilizer, with Ngao demanding accountability for how it reached farmers. Regarding Koome, he insisted that the former IG must take responsibility for the police actions that led to the deaths of protestors.
“We are giving a 72-hour ultimatum for the arrest of police officers responsible for these fatalities,” Ngao declared, adding that any attempt to reinstate the dismissed Cabinet members would provoke further discontent among the youth.
Furthermore, the council stressed the importance of increasing Muslim representation in the next Cabinet, suggesting at least five Muslim members, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of Muslims across Kenya.
Kemnac vice-chairman Abubakar Amin called for a lifestyle audit of all dismissed Cabinet members to ensure transparency in their financial dealings. He insisted that their bank accounts be scrutinized to uncover any discrepancies.
While advocating for peaceful protests, the council cautioned Gen Z against violence, warning that such actions could lead to chaos. Sheikh Ngao reminded the youth of the dire consequences faced by countries that succumbed to violent protests, referencing conflicts in regions like Sudan, Somalia, and Syria.
“In pursuit of your demands, ensure your actions do not escalate into violence,” he urged, highlighting the need to maintain peace for the sake of the nation.
