Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Starlink, expressed pride in the impact his satellite internet service has had in Kenya. President William Ruto, during the US-Kenya Business and Investment Roundtable at the UN General Assembly, acknowledged Starlink as a game changer in the country’s internet market, citing how it fostered competition and led providers like Safaricom to improve services. Musk, who launched Starlink in Kenya in July 2023, agreed with Ruto, noting that Starlink’s presence has prompted local competitors to enhance their offerings.
Starlink offers a 50GB data package at Sh1,300 with speeds up to 220 Mbps, significantly cheaper and faster than the competition. Starlink’s satellite-based service provides an edge in rural areas where fibre-optic infrastructure is limited.
