Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has officially handed over the sports docket to his successor, CS Salim Mvurya, while highlighting his achievements during his four-month tenure.
Murkomen emphasized his contributions to sports governance, including facilitating elections within the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), promoting good governance, and appointing key members to the National Youth Council and related boards.
He spearheaded infrastructure upgrades at venues like Kasarani, Nyayo, and Kipchoge Keino Stadiums, ensuring their readiness for major events like CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027. Additionally, he initiated the construction of 37 sports academies as part of a larger plan for 290 facilities.
Murkomen noted advancements in nurturing young talent, with the Kenya Academy of Sports training 3,000 athletes in December 2024, up from 1,800 the previous year. Elite camps also trained 430 young athletes in five disciplines.
Under his leadership, the NYOTA project was launched, offering Sh50,000 startup grants from January 15, and efforts to host the Africa Grammys headquarters progressed with requisite payments completed.
Reflecting on his tenure, Murkomen credited his leadership approach and acknowledged the groundwork laid by his predecessor as he passed the mantle to Mvurya.
