Allies of President William Ruto from Mount Kenya face backlash for supporting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, with voters labeling them as “traitors.” Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi encountered protests from their constituents, who are demanding accountability.
Mathenge was booed by residents on November 11, while Wamumbi faces a signature collection drive in Mathira constituency led by local leader Samuel Ngari. This recall effort aims to gather 31,000 signatures, with accusations against Wamumbi including abuse of office and voter bribery.
Despite the push for his recall, Wamumbi claims the movement aims to distract him from speaking on issues affecting coffee farmers. Gachagua, still popular for his advocacy for the region, has strong local support, with leaders like Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa rallying behind him.
