Michelle Obama has dismissed speculation about trouble in her marriage to former President Barack Obama, emphasizing her personal independence and decision-making. Speaking on the Work in Progress podcast with actress Sophia Bush, the former First Lady said she is now at a point in her life where she can freely manage her own schedule without external expectations.
Without directly referencing recent high-profile events she missed—such as Donald Trump’s inauguration or former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral—Mrs Obama pointed out that her choices were misconstrued. “People couldn’t fathom that I was making a choice for myself… they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” she said, adding that society often struggles to accept that women can prioritize themselves without it signaling personal crisis.
She reaffirmed her ongoing commitment to public service, highlighting her continued work in advocacy and education. The Obamas, who celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary last October, have previously acknowledged the challenges their relationship faced during their time in the White House, which Michelle detailed in her memoir Becoming. Despite stepping back from some public roles, she remains actively involved in speaking engagements and global initiatives.
