A memorial service for the 21 victims of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy is scheduled for Wednesday next week.
Acting regional commissioner for Nyeri, Pius Murugu, announced that the service will take place at Mweiga Stadium.
During a press conference, Murugu shared that some parents of the victims plan to bury their children on the same day. “We aim to conclude the memorial service by 11 a.m. so we can release the bodies to their respective families,” he said.
Following the burials, plans for other activities will be discussed. Murugu emphasized the need to reopen the school quickly, as students at other schools continue their studies while those from Endarasha remain at home.
He noted that investigations are ongoing, stating, “We are still taking statements from various individuals, a process that will take time. We appreciate the DCI for their swift action in releasing the bodies.”
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga added that the clergy leading the service will adhere strictly to the schedule. “The service will start at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 11 a.m. We aim to minimize unnecessary remarks,” he stated.
He assured that both national and county governments are collaborating closely to ensure everything proceeds smoothly. The tragic fire engulfed the boarding school’s dormitory on September 5, claiming the lives of boys who were asleep at the time, with over 150 pupils present in the dormitory.
