A fire broke out at the University of Nairobi’s Taifa Hall on Wednesday night, causing significant damage.
The blaze reportedly began in a restaurant kitchen within the building before spreading to other areas, including parts of the administration wing.
Central OCPD Stephen Okal confirmed the fire was initially contained past midnight but reignited at dawn, prompting the fire brigade to return and extinguish it.
No injuries were reported, but the damage to the historic structure is extensive, with property losses yet to be valued.
“This is a historic building, and the damage is massive. Fire experts will investigate to determine the cause,” Okal stated.
Videos on social media captured the intensity of the blaze, with flames and smoke visible across the campus. Police were deployed to deter looters while firefighters worked to contain the fire.
The incident, occurring just before scheduled exams, has drawn widespread concern, with many Kenyans raising alarms online and calling for swift action.
University spokesperson John Orindi said further updates would be issued in due course. The loss of the iconic structure is seen as a significant blow to the institution and the country’s heritage.
