Maria Sarungi, a Tanzanian media editor and human rights defender, has been found safe after being abducted by armed men in Nairobi. In a video shared on her X page, she assured her supporters of her safety and promised to share details about her ordeal.
“Thank you so much, I am safe. God is good, and tomorrow I will take time to properly thank you,” said Sarungi, who appeared with LSK President Faith Odhiambo and became emotional while expressing gratitude to Kenyans and Tanzanians for advocating for her release.
Sarungi was taken from Chaka Place in Kilimani by three armed men in a black Noah vehicle around 3:15 pm on Sunday. There has been no official comment from police regarding the incident, raising fears that she might have been at risk of being transported to Tanzania.
This incident follows the November 2024 abduction of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye in Nairobi. Besigye, attending the launch of Martha Karua’s memoir, was reportedly taken to Kampala and has been in remand with his colleague, Hajji Obeid Lutale. They face charges in Uganda’s court-martial, including unlawful possession of firearms.
