Preliminary investigations by police reveal that a 32-year-old man who allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life in Nandi County had meticulously planned the tragic events.
The incident occurred in Kibwareng village, Kemeloi, Nandi South, on Wednesday evening.
The man, identified as Hanice Simani Juma, reportedly attacked his 30-year-old wife, Winny Akutsa, while she was preparing dinner at her parents’ home. The couple lived in Donyo, Nairobi, but the wife had returned to her parents’ home recently.
Nandi South OCPD Peter Maina said the attack happened at approximately 7 p.m. and was carried out precisely as detailed in a note found on the man’s body.
Detailed Plan Found in a Note
The chilling note outlined the man’s meticulous plan, including his travel from Nairobi on January 13, his intended actions, and the items he needed to carry out the murder-suicide.
According to police, the list included:
- Fare for the trip from Nairobi
- A sharp knife
- Birth certificates
- A special knife
- Five bottles of rat poison
- Bhang
- A hood, mask, goggles, a small torch, and a carrier bag
The note detailed how he would spend the night at Serem Market before attacking his wife at exactly 7 p.m. It also described his plan to drink poison and slit his throat after the murder.
Sequence of Events
Maina reported that the man found his wife cooking in the kitchen and attacked her with a knife. Family members heard her screams and rushed to the kitchen, finding her critically injured and lying in a pool of blood. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The man fled the scene, consumed the poison he had prepared, and slit his throat. Residents also rushed him to the same hospital, but he too was pronounced dead.
Police Investigation
Police were alerted by the hospital about the suspicious deaths. During a search of the man’s body, they discovered the note detailing his plans.
OCPD Maina stated that the motive for the attack remains unclear, and the incident has left the local community in shock. Police are continuing their investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“We are following up on all leads to uncover why the man committed this heinous act,” Maina said.
The tragic event has highlighted the need for awareness and intervention in cases of domestic strife and mental health issues.
