Mali has announced the termination of diplomatic relations with Ukraine following accusations that Kyiv played a role in recent deadly fighting near the Algerian border. The conflict resulted in numerous casualties among Malian soldiers and Russian Wagner group mercenaries during clashes with Tuareg separatists and fighters linked to al-Qaeda.
The decision came after Ukrainian military intelligence spokesperson Andriy Yusov suggested that rebels had received assistance enabling them to conduct the attacks. This allegation prompted Mali to accuse Ukraine of violating its sovereignty.
Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, a senior Malian official, condemned Yusov’s comments, describing them as an admission of Ukraine’s involvement in what he termed a “cowardly, treacherous, and barbaric attack” by terrorist groups. In response, Mali swiftly announced the severance of diplomatic ties with Ukraine.
The conflict erupted near Tinzaouaten, a town in northeastern Mali on the Algerian border, leading to significant losses for the Malian army and Wagner mercenaries. The exact casualties have not been confirmed, but reports suggest heavy losses for Wagner, marking one of their deadliest engagements since their involvement in Mali began.
This recent turmoil adds to Mali’s longstanding security challenges, which include a history of Tuareg separatism and the infiltration of Islamist militants. The country’s military junta, which took power in recent coups, shifted alliances away from former colonial power France to forge closer ties with Russia in efforts to stabilize the region.
