The Commandant of the Kenya Military Academy (KMA), Major General Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu, has retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age in the military. In a ceremony at KMA’s headquarters in Lanet, Nakuru County, Maj. Gen. Kiugu handed over leadership to Brigadier Peter Muthama Kimondiu, the Academy’s Chief Instructor.
Maj. Gen. Kiugu, who joined the Kenya Defence Forces in 1988 and was commissioned in 1989, reflected on his career with pride and encouraged cadets to embrace continuous improvement. He was promoted to Major General in 2021 and held key roles, including the Force Commander of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF).
Brig. Kimondiu praised Maj. Gen. Kiugu for his dedicated service, while Major General William Shume, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Innovation, and Security Studies, commended his leadership and contributions to the high standards of training at KMA.
Maj. Gen. Kiugu’s career included various command and staff roles, both locally and internationally, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and excellence.
