A 30-year-old man died after falling from a lorry and having his head crushed along Mhindi Mweusi Road in Embakasi, Nairobi. Police reported that Austin Mandela was riding on the lorry, which was loaded with assorted goods, when he lost his grip and fell. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday.
Witnesses and the lorry driver indicated that Mandela landed on the tarmac, rolled, and was then run over by the vehicle’s rear tires. Authorities were called to clear the road, and the body was transported to the mortuary. Mandela’s friends stated that he was returning home to Kware from work and had decided to hitch a ride on the moving lorry. It’s common in the area for casual laborers to take such risks when they lack fare.
In a separate incident, police are searching for a gang that robbed a police officer in Nakuru. The officer, stationed in Busia County, was attacked on Tuesday morning while waiting to board a matatu. He reported that a black car with four occupants stopped and offered him a ride. After negotiating a fare of Sh700, he boarded the vehicle, which initially drove towards Eldoret. However, the car picked up an additional passenger and, after bypassing the agreed stop at Sobea, continued to Twins Bridge in Sarambei. There, the occupants threatened the officer and the other passenger with pangas and rungus, demanding all their valuables.
The officer was robbed of Sh13,000 from his sacco mobile phone account and a Samsung A03 Core mobile phone. The other passenger lost Sh4,900 and a mobile phone. The officer sustained minor head injuries after resisting the attackers. The gang then forced them out of the vehicle and fled towards Eldoret. Police are investigating the robbery.
