Lawyers in Mombasa have announced plans to provide free civic education to residents, aimed at informing them of their rights. Members of the Mombasa Law Society (MLS) expressed this commitment during a meeting on Saturday, aligning their efforts with the Gen Z movement, which advocates for politics grounded in integrity and aims to guide Kenya toward economic prosperity.
Brian Okoko, a lawyer and MLS member, emphasized that despite the 2010 Constitution’s enactment, its principles have largely been overlooked by the political class. “Gen Z is now asking the right questions, with the answers rooted in the Constitution. Previously, such inquiries were stifled by fear,” he stated.
The lawyers believe the Gen Z movement represents a philosophy of accountability for leaders. During a recent forum, they highlighted concerns over the passage of numerous bills in Parliament without adequate public awareness, which often results in legislation that negatively impacts citizens.
“There is a pervasive culture of fear in this country, allowing government officials to operate without accountability,” Okoko remarked. He criticized local leaders for their lack of tangible contributions since taking office, particularly targeting the Mombasa governor.
“Be prepared to account for your actions, funds, and policies,” he urged, hinting at plans to mobilize Gen Z members for peaceful demonstrations at the governor’s residence and county assembly.
Titus Mutugi, another MLS member, stressed the importance of lending a professional perspective to the Gen Z movement through civic education. He noted that legal expertise is often lacking in public forums, and the lawyers aim to fill this gap before participating in discussions on new legislation.
Noah Randiek, also part of the MLS, underscored the ongoing unrest and calls for accountability amidst rising abductions linked to recent protests. “This turmoil persists even as the government fails to acknowledge the accountability of those in leadership,” he said.
Through these initiatives, the Mombasa Law Society aims to empower citizens and foster a culture of active participation and governance accountability.
