Gender Cabinet Secretary nominee Stella Soi Lang’at emphasized the imperative of tackling poverty in communities to combat early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
She highlighted that during her extensive experience in field administration, she observed that communities practicing FGM often exhibit high levels of poverty.
“In communities where FGM and early marriages prevail, poverty levels are notably high, and girls are often seen as economic assets,” she remarked.
“To effectively address the challenges associated with FGM and early marriages, we must uplift the economic status of our communities through empowerment initiatives targeting both men and women.”
Lang’at made these remarks during her appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments for vetting on Sunday.
She emphasized the role of supportive male figures in enabling girls to thrive and become dependable community members.
“As someone raised by a mechanic, I can attest that without the support of male figures in families, women’s empowerment and girls’ protection efforts are hindered,” she asserted.
Lang’at also stressed the importance of ensuring access to education for girls and providing essential items like sanitary towels to facilitate their smooth transition through puberty.
Furthermore, she underscored the need to offer alternative livelihood opportunities to women involved in perpetuating FGM and to intensify community awareness campaigns in affected areas.
