Protests erupted in Korogocho on Tuesday as slum residents demonstrated against the government’s proposed social and affordable housing project. A building within the chief’s camp, commonly known as the RC building and used by National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), was pelted with stones, though the chief’s office and police post remained intact.
Chaos ensued after residents walked out of a public participation meeting at the chief’s camp, arguing that the project was being imposed on them without proper consultation. Looting broke out, leading to property destruction and injuries, including a person shot in the leg and two others stabbed. Protesters also accused the government of failing to compensate those displaced by previous development projects. Despite claims of exclusion, official notices show residents were invited to the meeting.
