National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has described Meta’s introduction of monetization features in Kenya as “transformative,” highlighting its potential to revolutionize the local content creation industry and create substantial job opportunities for the country’s creative youth.
Ichung’wah emphasized that this initiative will have a profound impact on content creation in Kenya, dubbing the new phase the “Finya Computer Pata Dollar” era. This term aligns with President William Ruto’s drive to foster digital job opportunities for young people.
“The President has been a strong advocate for leveraging ICT hubs to generate employment and encouraging youth to utilize digital platforms effectively,” Ichung’wah said.
Announced on Tuesday, this move makes Kenya the fifth African nation to offer Facebook monetization, joining South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Ghana. Ruto’s campaign to introduce monetization features began in 2023 as part of a broader effort to provide job opportunities for youth engaged in online content creation.
Ichung’wah noted that this development not only creates job opportunities but also promotes innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among young people.
To earn money from Facebook, content creators must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of 5,000 followers. Content must be original, ensuring creators are rewarded for their unique contributions. The monetization options include In-Stream Ads, which can appear before, during, or after on-demand videos, and Facebook Ads on Reels.
This milestone signifies more than just a financial opportunity; it marks a significant empowerment of Kenya’s youth, enabling them to turn their passion into a profession and contribute to the national economy while showcasing their creativity.
Kenya’s inclusion in the list of African nations monetizing Facebook underscores the country’s growing influence in the digital arena. By providing a platform for creators to earn, Meta acknowledges the potential of Kenya’s vibrant digital community.
“This reflects the government’s commitment to creating job opportunities and supporting youth in leveraging digital technology,” Ichung’wah remarked. As Kenyan content creators begin to benefit from this new era, the country is set to emerge as a leading hub for digital innovation and creativity in Africa.
