Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has suggested that the Azimio la Umoja coalition has fulfilled its purpose and should now be dissolved. Alai indicated that the coalition was primarily formed to secure the presidency during the 2022 general election, a goal that ultimately did not materialize.
“We find ourselves led by individuals with varying interests. Our objective was to win an election, and if this marks the end of Azimio, then so be it,” Alai stated in a recent television interview.
This statement follows an incident on Wednesday when a group of youth disrupted an Azimio press conference at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation. Alai emphasized that as members of the ODM party, they will not allow external influences to dictate their actions. “You cannot be in opposition while many of your members are in government,” he remarked.
The press conference, led by Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, was interrupted by over 50 youths who asserted that they would not tolerate any disrespect towards Raila Odinga. “Nobody disrespects Raila when we are alive; there will be no press conference here,” the youths declared, causing chaos at the event.
In the aftermath, Raila Odinga issued an apology to journalists and fellow leaders affected by the disruption. His spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, conveyed that Odinga regrets the unfortunate events and assured that the party would investigate how security was breached during the incident.
