A Kiambu politician has stated that President William Ruto should apologize to the nation before initiating any talks. Former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi emphasized that, as the head of state, Ruto must demonstrate care and concern for the citizens.
Mwathi pointed out that the President has observed the ongoing protests by Gen Z, which have resulted in fatalities and injuries. He highlighted the urgent calls from politicians, civil society, and religious leaders for Ruto to listen to the concerns of Kenyans.
The protests, led by Gen Z, are fueled by issues such as unemployment, corruption, the appointment of commissioners to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the rising cost of living, the recently withdrawn Finance Bill 2024, and the excessive use of force by police in response to the demonstrations.
“The President has seen the origins of the Gen Z protests, including the tragic deaths and injuries sustained by the youth. He must be aware of the collective appeals from civil society, the media, religious leaders, and well-meaning citizens urging him to address these pressing issues,” Mwathi stated.
He added that the opposition’s withdrawal from national dialogue, along with the ongoing protests, signals that many concerns remain unaddressed.
Speaking in Limuru on Tuesday, Mwathi called on residents to pray for peace, emphasizing the need for stability in daily life. He argued that since most of the President’s strategies to manage the situation have not yielded positive results, a change in approach is necessary.
“Ruto should take a courageous step and apologize to Kenyans for everything he is being accused of and for the broader issues affecting the country, including the loss of life,” Mwathi asserted. “These incidents have occurred under his leadership, and as Head of State, he needs to help ease tensions.”
Mwathi, who previously chaired the National Security Committee of the National Assembly, ran for the Limuru MP seat on a Jubilee Party ticket but lost to the incumbent, John Kiragu, of UDA.
He warned that if the President does not act quickly to stabilize the nation, public trust in his leadership could erode. “It is disheartening when citizens lose faith in their sitting President. He must address the issues plaguing the country swiftly. As the symbol of national unity, his role is crucial and deserves respect,” Mwathi stated.
Additionally, he urged Ruto to remain true to his word regarding government officials and leaders attending fundraising events, noting that the President himself attended a fundraiser on Sunday.
