As the August 31, 2024 deadline set by utility provider Kenya Power approaches, Kenyans are actively updating their prepaid meters. The nationwide campaign, launched three weeks ago, aims to ensure all meters conform to the new Standard Transfer Specification (STS). Currently, Kenya Power reports that two million meters have already been upgraded, with a target of 7.4 million.
This achievement marks nearly 30% completion towards the campaign’s goal, demonstrating substantial progress since its inception.
“We are pleased with the response from our customers who have shown a commitment to updating their meters,” remarked Kenya Power Managing Director Joseph Siror. “We are optimistic that all prepaid customers will have completed their meter upgrades by the August 31st deadline.”
Significance of the Prepaid Meter Upgrade
The initiative to upgrade meters, launched in mid-last month, aligns with global efforts to enhance the security and efficiency of prepaid metering systems. The STS ensures secure token transfers to prepaid meters, safeguarding the integrity of token transactions.
Addressing Customer Concerns
Despite the positive reception, some customers have raised concerns, particularly regarding meters that are inactive or not in use due to various reasons, including changes in residence.
One major concern is verifying the upgrade status of a prepaid meter in a new residence. In response, Kenya Power customer care advises a straightforward approach:
“The best way to confirm if a prepaid meter has been updated is by recharging it with tokens,” explained a Kenya Power agent during a recent call. “If the meter accepts the recharge, there’s no issue. However, if it rejects the recharge, customers should contact us for assistance.”
The agent further advised: “Use the account number provided at your new residence. Purchase and recharge tokens. If the token is accepted, your meter is updated. If not, please call us for support.”
This proactive approach ensures clarity and support for customers amidst the ongoing meter upgrade campaign.
