President William Ruto has announced that Kenya will co-host the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA), an international institution focused on accelerating climate action. This will establish Nairobi as a dual headquarters alongside Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Speaking after a GCA meeting at Sagana State Lodge, Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme alongside Senegalese President Macky Sall, the new GCA Board Chair. He emphasized Africa’s role as both the most affected by climate change and a hub for green innovation.
Ruto thanked development partners, including the UK, Norway, France, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, and the Gates Foundation, for supporting Africa’s climate resilience efforts. The decision to establish a GCA office in Nairobi was influenced by Ruto’s visit to the Netherlands in 2023, where he challenged GCA leaders to strengthen their presence in Africa.
