Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi led a memorial event honoring police officers who died in the line of duty in 2024. The ceremony, held at the National Police Service Embakasi Campus, unveiled a memorial listing the names of the 29 officers who lost their lives this year, a decrease from 37 in 2023.
Most deaths resulted from terrorist attacks and livestock theft raids, while two officers were killed during a rescue mission to save girls from undergoing FGM in Elgeyo Marakwet.
Mudavadi pledged government support for the families of fallen officers, including employment opportunities for widows and orphans. Six widows and three orphans were recruited into the police force in January 2023, with further recruitments planned.
Initiatives to enhance police welfare include providing housing, medical services, mental health support, and establishing a Veterans Endowment Fund. The event underscored the bravery of officers who safeguard Kenya’s safety and called for public respect for police service.
Other officials in attendance included Interior PS Dr. Raymond Omollo, DCI Director Mohamed Amin, and Prison Services Commissioner General Patrick Aranduh.
