This meeting between the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) and Radio Africa Group highlights their commitment to safeguarding press freedom and adapting to industry challenges. Key concerns raised included costly libel cases that threaten media operations and the fast-paced evolution of artificial intelligence. KEG president Zubeidah Kananu revealed ongoing discussions with UNESCO for litigation training to help journalists navigate legal hurdles.
Radio Africa Group editorial director Paul Ilado welcomed KEG’s initiatives and called for expanded collaboration. He stressed the financial strain of hefty defamation fines and suggested more frequent KEG updates. Other proposals included inter-media sports competitions, town halls to boost awareness, and encouraging more newsroom editors to join KEG. The meeting also underscored the need for updated ethical guidelines, in-house policies on issues like sexual harassment, and a better balance between editorial independence and commercial pressures.
