The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that Mohammed Deif, the commander of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in an airstrike on Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip on July 13. The IDF confirmed Deif’s death following an intelligence assessment.
Deif, identified as the second-in-command of Hamas in Gaza and a key figure behind the October 7 massacre, was said to have worked closely with Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’ leader in the Gaza Strip. The IDF statement noted that Deif directed terrorist activities during the conflict and issued orders to senior Hamas members.
Additionally, the airstrike on July 13 also resulted in the death of Hamas Khan Yunis Brigade Commander Rafa’a Salameh, whose death was confirmed several weeks later.
The conflict intensified after Hamas militants launched an incursion into Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to attacks on Israeli settlements and hostage-taking. In retaliation, Israel commenced an offensive targeting Hamas’ military and political infrastructure in Gaza and sought to rescue hostages.
