Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya will lead the military in commemorating the 13th Kenya Defence Forces Day on Monday, October 14, at Thika Garrison in Kiambu County.
This year’s event is particularly significant as troops prepare to return home following the conclusion of their African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in December, as outlined in the ATMIS timeline. This will mark Tuya’s first time presiding over the celebrations, which honor the courage and bravery of KDF heroes and heroines.
KDF Day has been observed annually since October 2012, following the launch of Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011, an operation that showcased KDF’s capabilities in national defense. The theme for this year is “One Force, Mission Ready: Unity in Action for National Security and Development.”
Officials emphasized the importance of KDF Day, stating, “This is the most significant day in the KDF calendar. It reflects their commitment to duty. We must thank our soldiers for their sacrifices.” During the event, exceptional soldiers will be recognized and awarded for their remarkable contributions.
Operation Linda Nchi saw Kenyan forces collaborate with Jubaland security forces to liberate the port city of Kismayo and reclaim twelve other towns from Al-Shabaab. In February 2012, Kenyan troops were integrated into the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) following a UN resolution. Kenya is one of five ATMIS Troop Contributing Countries alongside Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
Despite challenges, including the tragic Battle of El Adde in January 2016, which resulted in the loss of over 100 soldiers, KDF personnel have continued to successfully liberate many regions in their ongoing mission.
