National security officials report that protection for Donald Trump was increased several weeks ago after U.S. authorities uncovered an Iranian plot to assassinate him. While officials assert there is no known connection between this alleged Iranian threat and the assassination attempt on Trump during a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, the heightened security measures raise questions about how 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to get close enough to fire at Trump.
The U.S. Secret Service and the Trump campaign were informed of the Iranian threat, prompting an escalation in security protocols. According to a national security official, the Secret Service augmented their protective measures in June, which included deploying additional counter-assault and counter-sniper agents, drones, and robotic dogs.
Intelligence sources disclosed to CBS News that these details were acquired through “human source intelligence” amid a significant rise in Iranian discussions about potential attacks on Trump. Since the 2020 drone strike that killed Qassim Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Quds Force, both Trump and officials like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have been targeted by threats from Tehran.
In response to the reports, Iran’s mission to the United Nations labeled the allegations as “unsubstantiated and malicious,” asserting that Trump is a “criminal” who must face legal consequences.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, emphasized that the agency continuously receives and assesses potential threats, adapting resources accordingly. He refrained from commenting on specific threats but assured that the Secret Service treats all threats with seriousness.
The Trump campaign opted not to discuss security specifics and directed inquiries to the Secret Service. Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, confirmed that U.S. officials have been monitoring Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, emphasizing the priority of national and homeland security. She reiterated that the investigation has not uncovered any connections between Crooks and other potential conspirators.
In 2022, the Department of Justice charged a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with orchestrating a plot to kill former National Security Advisor John Bolton, likely in retaliation for Soleimani’s death.
Concerns have arisen regarding the effectiveness of the security measures at the rally in Pennsylvania, especially since local police and Secret Service agents were reportedly inside the venue while Crooks was on the roof aiming at Trump from approximately 130 meters (430 feet) away. Local police snipers were aware of Crooks’ presence but did not intervene.
The local sheriff’s department referred inquiries to state police, which claimed to have provided all necessary resources, including 30 to 40 troopers stationed inside the perimeter.
In light of the incident, President Joe Biden has called for an independent review to understand how the gunman accessed such proximity to Trump, with additional investigations into the matter also being conducted by Congress.
