The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weekend weather update indicating heavy rainfall across multiple regions of the country from April 12 to 13. The affected areas include both the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley—such as Nairobi—as well as the South-eastern lowlands, Coast region, and parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.
Specific counties expected to experience significant rainfall include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. The alert follows a period of intense rainfall that has already damaged infrastructure in several places, including flooded roads in Nairobi.
This period marks the peak of the “Long Rains” season, with most areas forecasted to receive near-to-above-average rainfall, accompanied by occasional storms. The rains have already started in some regions and are expected to continue intensifying, especially in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and surrounding highlands. The weatherman noted that the Coastal region should expect the peak of the rainy season in May.
