On Wednesday, the Palestinian group Hamas confirmed that its politburo chief, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his residence in Tehran, Iran. The strike occurred while Haniyeh was in the city for the inauguration of Iran’s new president.
Somalia has strongly condemned Haniyeh’s assassination, calling it a violation of international law and expressing deep concern over the rising violence in the region. The Somali Foreign Ministry urged the international community to act urgently to halt what it termed Israeli aggression in Gaza and violations of international law and UN resolutions.
While Hamas has attributed the attack to Israel, the Israeli government has neither confirmed nor denied involvement. This incident comes amid Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, which has led to nearly 40,000 Palestinian civilian casualties, primarily women and children, according to health authorities in Gaza. The conflict has devastated much of Gaza and prompted widespread international condemnation.
