A 21-year-old herder was shot and seriously wounded in an attack by gunmen in the Wamba area, Samburu County. Police said the raid occurred in the Silanko sub-location, Nkaroni location, but the motive remains unclear.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach but was not robbed. He was rushed to Maralal Hospital for specialized treatment and remains in serious condition.
The attack comes amid rising insecurity in the region, including a deadly ambush on Monday in which gunmen killed a police officer and freed eight remand prisoners.
Constable Humphrey Oroba Angwenyi was transporting the prisoners from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi Police Station when gunmen opened fire, killing him on the spot and seizing his rifle. His two colleagues escaped unhurt.
The eight suspects, including individuals facing charges of defilement, illegal firearm possession, murder, robbery, and assault, fled during the attack.
Police believe the ambush was premeditated, with attackers aware of the officers’ movements. No arrests have been made, but additional security personnel have been deployed to track down the assailants.
The incident occurred despite the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift, which has significantly reduced banditry in the region over the past year.
