A long-distance bus traveling from Juba to Kampala was attacked by gunmen in South Sudan, resulting in at least one death and several possible kidnappings. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, with images showing the bus engulfed in flames and smoke rising into the air.
Despite a peace agreement aimed at ending years of civil conflict, insecurity persists in many regions of the country. Army spokesperson Maj Gen Lul Ruai Koang reported that a Ugandan man was killed, eight others were injured, and seven passengers are missing, believed to have been abducted. The rebel group National Salvation Front (NAS) is suspected of carrying out the attack, which took place approximately 80 kilometers from the capital.
Previous violent incidents have plagued the road between Juba and Nimule, including an ambush in August 2022 that resulted in the deaths of 11 passengers and another incident in which two Catholic nuns were killed.
