Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced that the national government will adjust the new university funding model before its full implementation. This decision follows public outcry from parents and students over alleged misclassification in the funding allocations.
Despite initial legal challenges, the Court of Appeal has allowed the government to proceed with the model. Speaking during Homa Bay County Education Day, Ogamba assured that modifications will be made in line with recommendations from the National Committee on the Review of the Model. The government is set to publish the revised framework within 14 days.
Ogamba emphasized that the model aims to resolve financial struggles in universities, with Sh41 billion already allocated to support 240,000 students. Additionally, he highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure a smooth transition under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), including teacher recruitment and infrastructure development.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga reiterated her administration’s commitment to education through bursaries and improved Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) facilities.
