Global agricultural companies have pledged to help farmers reduce food waste by 50% by 2030.
This commitment involves companies like Olam Agri, ITC Limited, Sereni Fries Ltd, Kinazi Cassava Plant, Spice World Ltd, ETG, and Premier Foods Ltd, who work with hundreds of thousands of farmers globally. Olam Group CEO Sunny Verghese highlighted that this collaboration allows sharing knowledge and best practices to tackle food loss, a critical issue in the supply chain.
Verghese, co-chair of the executive coalition behind the initiative, stated that around 40% of global food is lost between farms and consumers, affecting farmer incomes, food security, and the climate, costing over a trillion dollars annually. He emphasized the need to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste and reduce food losses by 2030.
Verghese urged governments and companies to prioritize food loss reduction, noting that cutting food waste could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5%.
