Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape in 2025 as they work towards forming a mega alliance.
Their camps have initiated comprehensive plans for a coalition aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. Insiders reveal that the alliance, expected to solidify in 2025, seeks to unite opposition forces into a formidable political movement with the objective of making Ruto a one-term president.
A New Opposition Force?
With former Prime Minister Raila Odinga likely to shift his focus to his campaign for the African Union Commission chairmanship, Gachagua and Kalonzo are expected to intensify their political activities. This coalition, tipped to become the primary opposition bloc, will include leaders like DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa and other Azimio members who have fallen out with Raila.
To formalize this alliance, a technical committee comprising representatives from both sides is working on structuring a partnership. Each camp has reportedly appointed four members to the committee, which operates discreetly as it explores strategies to build a powerful political machine for 2027.
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo confirmed progress, stating, “We have our teams, and the former Deputy President has his team. It is a work in progress.”
Gachagua’s Political Comeback
Following his impeachment and removal as UDA deputy party leader, Gachagua is reportedly exploring options to revive his political influence. These include acquiring or registering a new political party, with the Jubilee Party speculated as a possible vehicle. This development comes amid efforts by state strategists to neutralize Gachagua’s influence in the Mount Kenya region by fostering reconciliation between him and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Gachagua’s allies have dismissed claims of division within Mount Kenya, emphasizing their support for Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, who succeeded Gachagua. “We have no issue with Kindiki; he is a dedicated leader. Our concern is with those attempting to divide the region,” said Nyandarua Senator John Methu.
As part of his strategy, Gachagua is actively engaging with grassroots communities through church services and funeral appearances across Mount Kenya to reinforce his support base.
A Broader Political Movement
Meanwhile, Kalonzo and his allies, including Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, are fast-tracking plans to launch a broader political outfit. This coalition, touted as larger and more inclusive than Azimio, is expected to bring together key figures from various regions, including Mount Kenya.
“It is bigger than Azimio. We are moving quickly to establish our candidate and party. Everyone, including Gachagua, is welcome,” Mwangangi said.
The alliance reflects a growing discontent within Azimio, with leaders like Martha Karua’s Narc Kenya, Uhuru’s Jubilee, and Peter Munya’s PNU signaling their departure due to changing political dynamics. Kalonzo and Wamalwa have also hinted at a shift, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and transformative political vehicle.
“If all goes well, Azimio itself could be part of the new coalition,” Kalonzo remarked, highlighting the coalition’s ambition to unify opposition forces against the government.
