Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown his weight behind Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, calling him the best candidate to lead the continent into the future. Gachagua praised Raila’s deep understanding of Africa’s challenges and his ability to unify both Anglophone and Francophone nations.
He emphasized that Raila’s victory in the February 15 election in Addis Ababa would not only be a win for Kenya but also a significant step towards strengthening Africa’s unity and progress.
Raila faces stiff competition from Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. His chances were further complicated by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) urging its 16 member states to back Randriamandrato. The election will require a candidate to secure two-thirds of the 55 AU member states’ votes to clinch victory.
