Four miners suffocated in an abandoned gold mine in Ruga village, Kowidi Location, Homa Bay County, on Monday afternoon. They entered the 900-foot-deep site without oxygen-supporting equipment or notifying the owner. A fifth miner, who remained at the entrance, raised the alarm after noticing the rope had stopped moving. Authorities have since banned unlicensed mining, citing safety concerns, and ordered proper site management.
