Ford Kenya has vowed to challenge a High Court ruling that declared National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s leadership of the party unconstitutional. The court ruled that holding both positions compromised the impartiality required of a speaker, effectively nullifying his role as party leader.
Party Secretary General John Chikati dismissed the decision as an attempt to weaken Ford Kenya and the Kenya Kwanza coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. He argued that the Constitution does not bar a speaker from leading a political party, emphasizing that the role is elective, not appointive.
The ruling has reignited debate over the National Assembly’s majority status, with legal experts suggesting it could pave the way for Azimio to claim majority leadership. While some politicians demand Wetang’ula choose between the two roles, Ford Kenya insists on pursuing an appeal to overturn the decision.
