At least 10 first-time governors are set to face intense competition as the battle for key county seats gains momentum more than two years before the next elections.
It has been learned that political heavyweights, including seasoned politicians, are already strategizing to unseat incumbents. Since the introduction of devolution in 2013, gubernatorial seats have become highly coveted, offering executive authority and control over multi-billion-shilling budgets. In many counties, governors are regarded as local presidents.
Fierce political contests are expected in Nairobi, Machakos, Turkana, Isiolo, Kiambu, Mombasa, Narok, Kisii, Kakamega, Kilifi, and Kericho.
In Nairobi, Governor Johnson Sakaja is set to face stiff competition from at least four aspirants, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, and former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru. Owino has openly declared his candidacy, while Wanyonyi confirmed he will be on the ballot under the ODM ticket.
Sakaja, however, remains confident, citing his track record in delivering services to Nairobi residents. His strong ties with both President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga could also complicate matters for his challengers.
In Kakamega, Governor Fernandes Barasa will be up against Senator Boni Khalwale and former Senator Cleophas Malala, both of whom have confirmed their bids. Malala criticized Barasa’s administration for stalling key development projects, vowing to “rescue the county.”
Isiolo is gearing up for a heated contest between Governor Abdi Guyo and Senator Fatuma Dullo. Dullo has frequently clashed with Guyo over alleged underperformance, while the governor insists his administration has significantly improved services.
In Kiambu, Governor Kimani Wamatangi will face off against Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba and former Thika MP Patrick Wainaina.
Mombasa’s gubernatorial race is also shaping up as a high-stakes battle, with incumbent Abdulswamad Nassir expected to face UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, former Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, EALA MP Suleiman Shahbal, and Mombasa Speaker Aharub Khatri.
Ali, currently recovering from surgeries following an injury, remains undeterred, saying he will campaign on his development record. He highlighted his achievements in education, security, and infrastructure, pledging to replicate the same at the county level.
With more than two years to the elections, the race for governorship is already heating up, setting the stage for intense political battles across key counties.
