Police in Igembe, Meru County are investigating a fire that ravaged Njia Boys High School, destroying property of undetermined value. The blaze erupted on Sunday evening while students were having supper, affecting the Jamhuri dormitory, which housed 150 students. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but students’ personal belongings were lost in the fire.
This incident follows a troubling pattern of school fires. For example, a recent fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri resulted in the deaths of 21 pupils and left 25 others hospitalized with severe burns.
In a separate incident, dozens of tourists were evacuated from the Diani Reef Resort’s Spa section in Kilifi after a fire broke out there. The blaze, which started in the sauna area, destroyed property before it was brought under control. The Kwale County Fire Brigade responded quickly, and no injuries were reported. The fire did not affect the main resort facilities, including guest accommodations and dining areas. The management confirmed that regular operations continue uninterrupted.
