Police are investigating a dramatic and tragic incident where a suspect was shot and killed during an alleged attempt to break into the official Kenya Police Central Stores in Nairobi.
The central store houses essential items for the Kenya Police, including uniforms, boots, berets, teargas canisters, buttons, and other equipment.
The shooting occurred on the night of Sunday, August 4, after a police officer on duty heard disturbances emanating from one of the store areas. The officer alerted colleagues upon suspecting a potential theft, and they quickly responded to the scene.
According to the police team, they discovered an unknown adult male armed with a crude weapon attempting to break into the store. Despite orders to surrender, the suspect tried to flee on foot around 9 pm. In response, an officer fired shots that fatally wounded the suspect.
Upon searching the deceased, authorities recovered a Kenya Police beret and a communication device believed to have been stolen from the store.
Senior police officials visited the site, and the body was subsequently transported to the mortuary for further examination.
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei stated that investigations are ongoing to determine if the deceased had any prior involvement in similar incidents and to uncover his motives. The Central Stores are highly secured due to the sensitive nature of the government materials stored within.
Authorities plan to conduct a search of the suspect’s residence once his identity is confirmed, a process that began at the City mortuary where the body was taken.
