Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii hosted governors from the North Rift region in preparation for the elevation of Eldoret to city status on August 8.
Present at the gathering were Stephen Sang (Nandi), Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet), and Jeremiah Lomurukai (Turkana), who highlighted the potential economic benefits of the city’s elevation. Sang, Chairman of the North Rift Economic Bloc, emphasized that Eldoret’s new status would enhance the region’s economic prospects.
Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and local MPs also attended the meeting, underscoring Eldoret’s rich heritage and its potential as a significant tourism destination.
President William Ruto is scheduled to visit Eldoret to confer the city charter to Governor Bii.
“We are eagerly anticipating the President’s visit and preparing to welcome him and all guests as we celebrate Eldoret’s new city status,” Bii remarked.
He emphasized community involvement in preparations for the ceremony, including a ten-day waiver of charges to support local businesses in beautifying the town for the occasion.
“Sang noted that Eldoret’s elevation would catalyze regional growth, predicting substantial infrastructure development and economic transformation within five years,” Sang stated.
Governor Sang mentioned plans for expanding Eldoret International Airport and anticipated positive economic impacts on neighboring towns such as Kapsabet, Kitale, and Iten.
Upon achieving city status, Eldoret will become Kenya’s fifth city after Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nakuru.
