Agriculture Cabinet Secretary nominee Andrew Karanja has issued a firm warning to cartels operating within the Ministry of Agriculture, promising to eradicate their influence if approved.
Karanja stressed his commitment to integrity and vowed to dismantle the cartels affecting Kilimo House. “Dealing with cartels is a significant challenge, but if confirmed, I assure you that these cartels will be out of business. Integrity is a principle I hold dearly, and I will not compromise on it,” he stated.
He emphasized that prioritizing the interests of the country and its farmers is paramount. “I will take all necessary measures to address this issue,” he declared.
Karanja plans to implement robust governance systems and involve all relevant government agencies to tackle the problem. “The government has the capacity and systems needed to combat these cartels,” he added.
He also committed to improving transparency in the procurement and distribution of agricultural products, particularly fertilizers. Karanja highlighted past issues with fake fertilizers and pledged to ensure high standards by involving the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
Karanja was the first nominee to undergo vetting by the Committee on Appointments, chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. Four additional nominees are scheduled to face the panel.
