Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has strongly criticized the planned eviction of traders operating in Soko Mugdi and makeshift stalls along access roads in Garissa Market. This comes after the Garissa County Government directed traders to vacate and relocate to designated market stalls.
Speaking at Madrasa Khadija during a graduation ceremony, Duale expressed his disapproval of the move, stating that stakeholders must be consulted before such an action is taken. He was accompanied by Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo.
Duale emphasized that leaders should not seek votes from small traders such as mama mbogas and boda boda operators, only to turn against them once in office. He condemned the harassment and displacement of traders, stating that many leaders, including himself, were raised by parents who depended on such small businesses.
He called on Governor Nathif Jama, area MP Dekow Mohamed, and the county commissioner to hold an urgent meeting to find a structured and fair solution for the traders. He further pointed out that President William Ruto was elected with support from small-scale traders, and they should not be victimized.
Duale proposed an alternative solution—instead of evicting the vendors, the county should engage KURA and KeNHA to install speed bumps to ensure vehicles slow down for safety.
Currently, municipal enforcement officers have been deployed at market entrances to prevent roadside selling, and barriers have been erected to restrict vehicle access.
