U.S. Senator Cory Booker has delivered the longest speech in Senate history, speaking for 25 hours and four minutes in a symbolic protest against President Donald Trump. The New Jersey Democrat warned of a “grave and urgent” moment in American history, delaying legislative business in the Republican-controlled Senate.
Although not a filibuster, Booker’s speech surpassed the previous record of 24 hours and 18 minutes set by Strom Thurmond in 1957. He read letters from constituents, discussed sports, recited poetry, and answered questions from colleagues.
Booker, who has both enslaved people and slave owners in his ancestry, emphasized the power of the people over past segregationist figures. His speech, supported by fellow Democrats, marked a significant act of resistance against Trump’s policies.
