Notorious businesswoman Joyce Akinyi has been convicted in a drug trafficking case, turning the spotlight on powerful individuals who allegedly attempted to shield her. During the five-year trial, unnamed influential figures reportedly tried to sway prosecutors to give Akinyi leniency, but the prosecution team led by Norah Achieng, Annette Wangia, and Faith Mwila presented strong evidence of her involvement in a sophisticated international narcotics operation.
Director of Public Prosecution Renson Ingonga revealed multiple attempts to influence the case, emphasizing the team’s commitment to ensuring a severe sentence as a warning to other traffickers. Akinyi, who operated a hierarchical drug network targeting Asian markets, used her crime proceeds to invest in real estate and luxury vehicles, some of which were seized as unexplained assets.
She was arrested in 2019 alongside Congolese national Pauline Kalala and Peres Ochieng at her Nairobi West bar, with heroin worth millions found in their possession. Ochieng absconded mid-trial, and sentencing is set for December 10, 2024. Investigators are pursuing further asset seizures, linking Akinyi to a larger drug empire and several imprisoned mules abroad.
Akinyi, previously jailed in India, gained notoriety for her secretive drug ring and lavish lifestyle. Her public feud with ex-husband Anthony Chinedu in 2009, over property and control of their alleged narcotics operations, further highlighted her controversial history.
