Igembe South in Meru is facing a severe condom shortage, sparking fears of a rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies. Deputy Public Health Officer John Muriungi highlighted the urgent need for government intervention, as the lack of supplies has persisted for months despite high demand.
The shortage threatens to heighten the risk of HIV, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. Although condoms are sold at low prices, many residents rely on free distribution, which accounts for 80% of the market. Economic hardships have further hindered access to these essential preventive tools.
Muriungi urged swift government action to prevent a potential public health crisis. Despite earlier efforts, including the distribution of over six million condoms in August, the supply remains insufficient, with Kenyans needing 400 million condoms annually.
